August 1, 2007

Dear members and friends of TUJ,

What an exciting and challenging year it's been!

  • Four bar mitzvahs and a baby naming
  • A march on Washington
  • Four Saturday lunch programs, each feeding over 150
  • A Heschel-King service that was filled to capacity
  • Torah Studies
  • Meaningful Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services
  • Festive Chanukah dinner
  • Joyous Passover seder
  • High-spirited Purim pageant
  • Israeli-style Tu B'shevat seder
  • Welcoming Park Avenue Christian Church's new ministry
  • An increase to two Friday night Shabbat services per month
  • A new partnership with the Union for Reform Judaism

We can all be proud to be members of New York's most unique congregation – a community of friends of all cultural and religious backgrounds, joining together to heal the world.

Our plans for next year are just as exciting. Our goals are to return the synagogue to sound financial footing, expand our partnership with the Park Avenue Christian Church, and provide more programs that bind us together in prayer, action, and fellowship.

With your renewed membership, and financial support, we can do it.

This year's appeal asks for your generosity in three ways:

1. Membership.

Your renewed membership keeps our doors open, allowing TUJ to continue to be a diverse, welcoming, activist congregation.

Member Eric Guy has written that "the world is a better place when people who are very different can bridge the things that separate them and come together in friendship."

The world needs communities like TUJ, and we need you.

2. High Holy Days Music.

We have created a separate fund to highlight the importance of music at our High Holy Days services. Music is the heart of our worship experience, transcending language and creating sacred space.

With your support, we will continue to offer our congregants, potential new members, and the public beautiful services with our professional music director, cantoral soloist, accompanist, and choir singers.

3. Jewish New Year Cards.

This new program raises both funds and awareness of TUJ in the community. Most of us are members because someone reached out to us. By sending TUJ cards – with High Holy Days schedule enclosed – to our relatives, friends, and neighbors, we will be "paying forward" the mitzvah.

Please join me in keeping TUJ secure and vital. Your commitment and dollars make it possible.

Peace,

Bonnie Fox
